The 2024 Martin Popoff short eBook about bands who have experienced a lot of death.
Welcome back to another Martin Popoff Top 20. The idea for this regular feature began strictly as a look at songs, and you can see that there are a bunch of those here at Zunior. But it’s expanded since that into a number of areas both more scholarly and more goofy. It’s been pretty satisfying constructing these because of the pleasant surprise that some of my most on-the-edge views and writing have been showing up regularly, not to mention picks and rankings that some of you might find completely out-to-lunch.
I mean, challenge accepted with this one, even though it’s a tough pile of memories to relive. We’re in a foreboding situation, aren’t we? A large bubble of our classic rock heroes is now at or past statistical life expectancy, so there’s no reason to think the passing on of rock stars is going to slow. But let’s go; let’s see which bands have been hit uncommonly hard so far. It was troubling work weighing the value of one life against another, and it was in fact weird enough qualifying entries to write up based on whether they were classic rock or not. I had at least a dozen other unfortunate cases I considered, but in the end, this classic rock distinction seemed to be the best way to frame the exercise.—Martin Popoff
