Welcome back to another Martin Popoff Top 20. The idea for this regular feature began strictly as a look at songs, and you can see that there are a bunch of those here at Zunior. But it’s expanded since that into a number of areas both more scholarly and more goofy. It’s been pretty satisfying constructing these because of the pleasant surprise that some of my most on-the-edge views and writing have been showing up regularly, not to mention picks and rankings that some of you might find completely out-to-lunch. Anyway, let’s get to it.
Glad to do this one, because there was hardly a more magic time for me than those years going to Zulu Records in Vancouver and discovering Superfuzz Bigmuff and Screaming Life, neither of which can be celebrated here, unfortunately, because, alas, they are EPs. And yes, Mudhoney at Richard’s on Richards in 1988 was one of the greatest concerts I ever saw. Okay, I had like another 20 honorable mentions, but let’s show some discipline and limit it to six (and to six unrepresented bands, because sensibly, I could name ten more albums by bands already on the list)’ All right, let’s go with My Sister’s Machine – Diva, Skin Yard – 1000 Smiling Knuckles, Liquid Sky – Pour in the Sky, Tad – 8-Way Santa and Mind Funk – Mind Funk. Onward!—Martin Popoff
